Wilma J. Zigmond

June 15 ,1946 - October 16, 2026

With deep love, gratitude, and hearts filled with sorrow, we announce that Wilma Jean (Workman) Zigmond entered eternal rest on October 16, 2026. She was a devoted Christian, a faithful wife, a loving mother, the best grammy, and a caring sister and daughter. She was very loved and treasured by many friends and colleagues. Wilma was also a gifted educator and served as a steadfast leader in the Logan community.

She made her home in Mitchell Heights with the love of her life, Kenneth Zigmond. Together, they shared 55 years of marriage. Wilma was a nurturing and supportive mother to Kendra (Jon) Schilling of Scott Depot and Kenneth (Natalie) Zigmond II of Winfield. Nothing brought her greater joy than her granddaughters: Kennedy Schilling, Kenlie Zigmond, Sydney Schilling, and Kallie Zigmond. They were her greatest blessing, and she made each of them feel deeply loved, supported, and treasured.

Wilma was born on June 15,1946 to the late Challis and Dova (Manns) Workman of Chapmanville. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister, Carol Joyce Wood.

Wilma’s Christian beliefs were the foundation of all she did. The life she lived was defined by her compassion, generosity and an abundance of strength and energy that made others feel supported and loved. She loved her First Presbyterian Church of Logan family and found much joy in doing children’s church, attending church circle and worshiping. Wilma’s dedication to her church, education and her community extend to that same foundation of care to countless students, colleagues, neighbors, and friends. She found so much happiness in doing things for others and she never met a stranger. Though she will be deeply missed, Wilma’s legacy will endure in the lives she shaped, the community she helped strengthened, and will be remembered by everyone that encountered her.

For most of Wilma’s 80 years of life, she was a part of Logan County Schools. She grew through the years as a Logan County student and graduated from Logan High School in 1964. She was an alumnus of Marshall University with a degree in Physical Education and Speech in 1968, and a master’s in education in1972. Wilma began her teaching career in physical education and served as cheerleading coach at Logan Central Junior High. In 1976, she returned to Logan High School to teach PE and Speech, was Dean of Students, yearbook advisor, and was the LHS Cheerleading Coach for many years during the “Coach Akers’ Era”. From 1984-1994, she was the “Head Rocket on the Hill” and as principal, she led Logan Central Junior High to become one of the first WV Schools of Excellence in West Virginia, in 1990. She served on staff at the Principals’ Institute, attended WV Principals’ Academy and she also presented there in 1990. In 1994, Wilma left Central and was Principal at her alma mater, Logan High School, for 5 years. During her LHS days, she served as the WVSSAC Deputy Director, President of WV Association of Secondary School Principals, WV Center for Professional Development Principals’ Advisory Council and was the WV Secondary Principal of the Year in 1996-97. She left Logan High to become the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Title II programs for Logan County for 8 years, then became the Superintendent of Logan County Schools in 2007. Wilma gave 45 years of service to Logan County Schools, retiring in 2013.

Wilma was also a point leader in her community. The energy and heart she put into her community services astonished so many. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society for women educators, a member of the Marshall University Alumni Association and the Big Green Scholarship Foundation-Logan Chapter, a member of the Southern WV Community College Board of Directors, served on the Governor’s Commission on the Middle Grades, WV Boy Scout Chief Cornstalk State Council, and Chair of the LHS Hall of Fame where she was also inducted in 2008.

She was extremely proud and it filled her heart to be on the board of directors for The Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation. For all of her commitments, Wilma was recognized by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce in 2010 for their Distinguished Service Award.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone that kept her in their prayers, visited, cooked and loved Wilma throughout her cancer journey. Thank you to Dignity Hospice, Dr. Kathy Harvey, Dr. Shelley Bailey and Dr. Pfaendler for their care and support.
