John "Skip" Queen

d. June 1, 2015

John S. "Skip" Queen of High Point, died on June 1st after his second bout with throat cancer. He was born on October 25, 1948 in Logan WV to Earle B. Queen and the late Radine A. Queen. He was also preceded in death by twin daughters, Sara and Lisa Queen. Surviving are his wife, Fran: son, Nathan and wife, Mary Queen of Charlotte, NC; granddaughters Lillian Blane, Stella James, and Rebecca Radine: sisters Linda (Willie) Akers of Logan, WV; Tina Queen of Charleston, WV and brother Mark (Harry Hall) of Winston-Salem, NC. Skip enjoyed, his life, having fulfilled many goals such as earning the rank of Eagle, God & Country Award, and Ordeal Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts. He graduated from Logan High School and Wake Forest University; he attained the CPU and CIC professional insurance designations. He proudly served four years in the US Navy before moving his family to High Point in 1976 where Skip continued his insurance career, retiring in 2013 after 33 years as a Vice President at High Point Bank and HPB Insurance. High Point provided the opportunity for Skip’s son Nathan to become an accomplished swimmer, which prompted Skip to volunteer with the High Point Swim Club and the Community Swim Association, each of which have named their Volunteer of the Year Award in his honor. He enjoyed being a USAS and NC high school swim referee and meet director. He was recognized with the Dick Know Distinguished Service Award by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and the Phillips 66 Outstanding Service Award by North Carolina Swimming. Skip was active at church and in the community. He was elected a Deacon & Elder while a Presbyterian; chaired the Salvation Army Advisory Board (named a Life Member); Lt. Governor & President of the Kiwanis Club of High Point (named a Life Member as well as the Kiwanian of the Century at their recent 95th anniversary celebration); and served five years as Treasurer of the High Point Chamber. Most recently he was teaching Junior Achievement classes at area schools and worked as a tutor at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club. Family was very important to Skip. He enjoyed going to Wake Forest football games with his brother Mark (and sometimes sis Tina, too), but days with his granddaughters were his favorite. Playing games with them, watching them rider their Big Wheels, in swim races like their Dad, and going on vacations with the kids were the best.
