Emil Canterbury

November 12, 1937 — March 26, 2022

Emil Canterbury, 84 of Henlawson WV, passed away on March 26th, 2022 surrounded by his family at his bedside after a valiant battle with cancer.

 He was born November 12th, 1937 to the late Edgar and Vinnie “Gore” Canterbury at Holden WV.  In addition to his parents other family members awaiting him in Heaven is his loving wife Phyllis “Crosby” Canterbury; his daughter Sherry “Canterbury” Curry; two sons Michael Canterbury and Christopher Canterbury; brothers Darrell Canterbury, Harold Canterbury, Junior Canterbury, Sherman Canterbury, Jackie Canterbury; sisters Glenna Calloway, Drema Canterbury, Beulah Jenkins and Carrie Sluss.

Those left behind to cherish his memories are his sons Patrick (Jackie) Canterbury of Hickory NC; Mark (Dawn) Canterbury of Logan WV; daughter in law April Canterbury of Delbarton WV.  Grandchildren, Jonathan (Christina) Curry of Huntington WV; Maranda (Christopher) Jones of Man WV; Valerie (Don) Chenier of Fayetteville NC; Blake (Kelly) Canterbury of Hickory NC; Jordan Canterbury of Hickory NC; Matthew Canterbury of Logan WV; Hailey Canterbury (Blake Runyon) of Delbarton WV and Noah Canterbury of Delbarton WV.  Great grand children Kelsie Kohan and Dalton Chenier of Fayetteville NC; Eleanor and James Canterbury of Hickory NC. Sisters Shirley Canterbury and Louanna  Goldrick both of Cleveland Ohio; Brian Perry honorary son of Rochester NY; and several nieces and nephews.

During his life Emil had many careers, those of which he was the most proud was being a Union coal miner, Union Field Representative and life-long Democrat. He also proudly worked for the State of West Virginia Labor Department in Weights and Measures Division when he retired.

Emil also proudly served in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged.

 His grandchildren were the loves of his life and once said that they were his second chance of being a better parent.

He was a long-time member of the Yuma Church of Christ and loved his church family dearly. He enjoyed going to church and studying the Bible. He had many scriptures that he loved and cherished.

There is no doubt that Emil is in Heaven with his beautiful wife and family…no pain… no burdens.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kanuri, Dr. Waris, Dr. Marzouk and Dr. Radha of Logan Regional Medical Center and the caring staff of Trinity Nursing Home at the Park for all of their comforting measures and actions that helped him transition peacefully.

At Emil’s request, funeral services will be a one-day event. The funeral will be Thursday, March 31st 2022 at 1pm. Visitation will be from 11am to 1pm the same day at Akers-James Funeral Home in West Logan with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.  Denney Collins and Clinton Ramey will be officiating the funeral.  Pallbearers will be family and friends.
