Edward J. Wood died Sunday, April 19, 2009 at home surrounded by his family. He was born September 16, 1925, at Clarksburg, West Virginia, a son of the late Carleton C. Wood and Norma Lear Wood. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Carleton C. Wood, Jr. Wood served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, and then attended West Virginia University graduating in 1950 with a BSEE degree. He came to Logan in 1950 as an Electrical Engineer with Appalachian Electric Power Company. He remained in this position until 1955 at which time he was employed by the late A.D. (Buster) Scaggs, Jr., in connection with the various coal businesses controlled by the late Mr. Scaggs. From 1955 until 1971, he served in various management and executive positions with Elkay Mining Company, Buffal Mining Company, the Snap Creek Coal Company, Mark Mining Company and others both in and out of West Virginia. In the early 1970's he became associated with The Pittston Company as a result of Pittston's acquisitions of the companies with which he had been associated. Wood was employed by the Pittston Company in various management and consulting positions until 1986. In 1986, he became President of W.W. McDonald Land Company, Bruce McDonald Holding Company, and Triadelphia Land Company, and served in this position until he retired in 1933. He was a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Community Health Foundation at Man, West Virginia, and served 12 years in this position during the time the first buildings were constructed. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Logan County Coal Operators Association and the WV Surface Mine Association. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the First Empire Federal Savings & Loan Association and Eagle Bancorp until their merger with United Bancshares. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan and a member of the Logan Country Club. Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Carol Joyce Workman Wood, one son , Dr. Carleton J. Wood (Sharon) of Mitchell Heights, two daughters, Mimi Wood Gillum of Mitchell Heights and Amy Wood Fraganeno of Logan, two grandchildren, J.T. Pauley and Hope Ashlee Fraganeno.
