Darrell Nelson

Darrell H. Nelson, 75, of Logan, West Virginia, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer and heart failure. A husband, proud father, loyal friend, beloved brother, and deeply loved family member, Darrell lived a life defined by devotion, hard work, generosity, and an unwavering love for the people around him.

Born on June 24, 1951, Darrell grew up in Peach Creek, WV, a place he cherished throughout his life. The values of community, family, and perseverance shaped him from a young age. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a determination to build his own path, Darrell left school early to begin working—never afraid to try something new, never hesitant to take on a challenge.

Darrell began his working life in the cable shop alongside his older brother, where he learned the value of skill, discipline, and teamwork. He later became a coal miner, embracing the demanding work with the same determination he carried throughout his life. After his time in the mines, he transitioned to the railroad, serving as a brakeman and taking pride in the responsibility and precision the role required.

His entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase and operate a gas station, a venture he ran with dedication and a hands‑on approach. Darrell then became part‑owner of Logan Driveshaft with his brother, contributing to the business with his characteristic work ethic and willingness to take on new challenges. Over the years, he also bought and refurbished several properties, never afraid to try something new and always eager to build something meaningful.

Darrell was the proud and devoted father of Glenn and Melinda, and loving stepfather to Angel and Jason. His grandchildren Brittany, Cody, Alexis, Stephen, Joshua, Hannah, Trey and Ethan, were the light of his life, and he adored his great‑grandchildren Alaysia, Zoey, Blake and Eastin.

His greatest joy was simply being with family, sharing stories, laughter, and love.

Darrell loved the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were not just hobbies they were traditions he shared with family and friends. He spent meaningful years in Mason County, teaching his grandchildren about nature, patience, and respect for the land.

Many will remember the orphaned deer he lovingly raised until they were strong enough to return to the herd, a testament to his gentle heart and deep connection to wildlife.

Darrell returned to Peach Creek later in life, reconnecting with the community that shaped him. He had a special place in his heart for helping others, forming lasting bonds with people who knew they could count on him. His kindness was quiet but powerful, and his generosity touched countless lives.

Darrell loved the Lord and carried a strong, personal relationship with Him throughout his life. He was one of thirteen children born to Howard and Mable Nelson. He is preceded in death by Richard, Billy, Willis, Teddy, Freddie, Willard, Kenny, Naomi, and Evelyn, and is survived by Linda, Harold, and David.

He had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, and brought joy wherever he went.

Darrell will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he supported, and the countless memories of a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and gave generously. 

A memorial service will be held at 4 pm, Sunday, August 30, 2026, at James Funeral Home with Pastor Donnie Wells officiating. Visitation will be from 2 pm until the time of service Sunday.
