Charles Vernon Curry

October 4, 1948 — June 17, 2023

Holden, WV

Charles Vernon Curry, 74, of Holden, WV peacefully departed this life on Saturday June 17, 2023, after a courageous fight with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. During his passing, he was surrounded by his family at his home in Julian, North Carolina. In his eternal life, he is now reunited with his parents, and his grandson, Charles “Tripp” Vernon Curry III.

Charles was born on October 4, 1948, in Holden WV. He was the son of Vernon and Shirley Curry and eloped to marry the love of his life, Patricia Winter Curry, on March 9, 1968. Together, they were blessed with 56 loving years of marriage, 3 sons, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Charles’ compassion for others was apparent through his service to his home, church, and country. He was known and respected for guiding impressionable youth, especially through his coaching of community sports. Charles was a retired, disabled coal miner who supported his family with over 30 years of dedicated work in the mines. His warmth and generosity touched every member of his church.  Furthermore, Charles valiantly served in the Army National Guard where he had the honorable duty of assisting in the aftermath of the 1972 Buffalo Creek Mine Disaster. He often relished sharing fond memories of his journeys and the lessons he learned with his family and friends, sharing his wisdom to all he could.

Music was an integral part of Charles’ life from his high school band “The Creatures” to his leadership in the church choir. He proudly inspired further generations of his family to hold the same passion for music as he did, teaching them to sing and play instruments such as the guitar, banjo, piano, mandolin, and more. Although his illness stole much from him, both music and his humor resonated with him to the very end. Even in the most difficult times, his wit and charming smile lit up the room and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Curry; his sister Jean (Mike) Kimler; his three sons Robert (Karen) Curry, Charles (Brandi) Curry, and Jeffery (Melissa) Curry; his grandchildren Jacob Curry, Hayley Curry, Cameron Curry, Katarina Curry, Carter Curry, and Noah Curry; and his two great-granddaughters Ava Curry and Adalynn Olayos.

The family of Charles Vernon Curry would be honored to have you celebrate his life and home-going.
