Betty Jean Maynard, 81, of West Logan was called home to be with the Lord while surrounded by her loving family on Monday, November 19, 2007 at Logan Regional Medical Center. Betty was born at Monaville of September 3, 1926 and was a lifelong resident of Logan County. She recently celebrater her 60th wedding anniversary with her loving and devoted husband, Stanford, who she met and fell in love with as a teenager. Betty was a graduate of Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston.) As a dedicated educator, Betty never stopped seeking knowledge and she was awarded a Masters Degree in Education, Counseling and Rehabilitation from Marshall University. Throughout her life, Betty continued learing and continued assisting those around her with their search for knowledge. As a retired elementary school teacher with over 31 years of service in the Logan County School System, Betty was universally loved and respected by her student and their parents. Adults who expressed their appreciation to her efforts stating that she was responsible for motivating them to achieve and to learn frequently greeted Betty. Many of her students credited her with being the sole reason they continued their education. Betty's first love was teaching but she was actively involved in several businesses with her loving husband, Stanford, primarily in Maynard's AG Market in Aracoma and as a partner in Maynard and Maynard. She was also active in numerous organizations beneficial to her community. One of Betty's many goals was to be influential in creating and developing within each child a desire for knowledge and in that regard one of her favorite quotes was, "Knowledge comes, but Widsom Lingers." Her parents, Elbert and Reece Cox, her brothers Elbert Cox Jr., and her nephew, Byron Joel Cox preceded Betty in death. She is survived by her loving and devoted family, Stanford Maynard of West Logan, Becky (Tom) Ferguson of Fort Worth, TX. and Patricia Maynard of West Logan. Her grandchildren; Colin (Jessica) Ferguson of Fort Worth, TX., Chase Ferguson of Austin, TX., and Zachary Ferguson of Fort Worth, TX. Additional survivors include her sisters; Peggy McKinney and Margaret Cox of Aracoma and her brother, William J. "Billy Joe" (Ruth) Cox of Point Pleasant. She will also be missed by her family by marriage, sister-in-law, Jean Maynard of West Logan and brothers-in-law, Marvin, Masil, William "Bill", and Darrell Maynard and their wives. Betty was an active member of numerous professional and service organizations. Among them were the Logan County Educational Association, WV Association of Retired Teachers, WV Grocers Association and the National Association of Retail Grocers. She served as the Senate Representative of her school for 27 of her 31 years as a teacher. Her civic organizations included Phi Delta Kappa International (25 year member), Marshall University Alumni Association, National Association of Federal Women's Clubs, Women's Club and the Crescent Garden Club of Logan where she served for a time as president of the club. Betty's faith was an integral part of her life and she was a member, former Sunday School teacher and frequently attended services at the West Logan Church of God until her declining health would not allow it. Nevertheless, Betty continued to worhsip the Lord and never missed watching and listening to her favorite minister's on television and radio. Betty's numberous friends and family will miss her but they know that God needed another angel and she will live forever there with God and with them in their hearts and minds. Betty, we love you so and will miss you always. The family wants to express their special thanks for the loving and tender professional care Betty was given by Dr. K. Radha, Dr. J. Joseph and Dr. N.R. Satish. Visitation will be Friday, November 23, 2007 from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M. at the West Logan Church of God. Funeral Services will be Saturday, November 24, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. at the West Logan Church of God with Rev. James Hughes and Rev. Roger Stewart officiating.
