Alan C. "Jim" Irby

Mar 7, 1933 — Jun 22, 2026

Lynchburg, VA

Jim Irby 93, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 22, surrounded by his loving family in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born to Henry and Cora Irby of Rustburg, VA, Jim was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his brothers Harris, Hunter and Wayne.

Jim shared a beautiful life with his wife, Ruby, and together they raised three children, Janet, Alana, and James, building a family that became one of his greatest joys and proudest accomplishments. He was also very proud of his children from a previous marriage, Alan Jr., Kim, Lisa, and Barry, and found great happiness in seeing his family grow through the generations. Blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, family remained an important part of Jim’s life and brought him much joy. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War, a chapter of his life that reflected the sense of duty and dedication he carried throughout his years. Following his military service, Jim built an exceptional career with Pepsi Corporation. Beginning in an entry-level position, he steadily worked his way through the organization, eventually becoming a sales representative and later advancing into senior leadership. Among his many professional accomplishments, he took great pride in establishing and managing a distribution center that serviced the Northern Virginia region. One achievement he often spoke of proudly was becoming the first person to place a Pepsi vending machine inside the Pentagon, a milestone that reflected both his determination and entrepreneurial spirit.

Outside of his career, Jim found great joy in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and could often be found tending to his garden, where he found both peace and satisfaction. Those who knew Jim knew him as a gifted storyteller; someone who could captivate a room with his stories, humor, and experiences gathered over a lifetime well lived.

Above all else, Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend. He took tremendous pride not only in his professional achievements, but in the family he built and the life he created through hard work, perseverance, and love. Jim leaves behind a legacy of dedication, strength, and family devotion that will continue to live on through all those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
