Obituary

E. Miller Cope, 78, of Logan, died December 15, 2018, at Dignity Hospice, Chapmanville, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Melvin Cope, and one brother, Garland Cope. He is survived by Judy, his loving wife of 54 years; three sons, Richard (Katherine) of Westfield, IN, Robert (Miranda) of Hurricane, WV, and Russell (Lori) of Liberty Township, OH; five grandchildren, Peyton, Olivia, Will and Benjamin Cope and Taylor Phillips; brother Luther Cope (Barbara) of Scott Depot, WV, sisters Ruth German (Bob) of Longboat Key, FL, Lu Craig (Jack), Murrells Inlet, SC, and sister-in-law Norma Jean Cope, Ravenswood, WV.

A graduate of Matewan High School, Miller received his degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1964. During his career, he worked for Roberts and Shaffer and Pittston Coal Company, retiring from JV Services of Danville.

Miller was an avid sports fan, especially of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Inducted into the 2017 class of the Logan High School Athletics Hall of Fame as a booster, he was well-known for his willingness to help with any project that Logan athletics needed.

Miller’s strong sense of family made involvement in his children's and grandchildren's activities a priority, from football, basketball and baseball games to ballet recitals and School of Rock concerts.

A servant at heart, Miller was a very active participant in First Presbyterian Church’s Hungry Lamb Initiative, and a wonderful neighbor and friend, always ready to help whenever help was needed. Your family, friends and Logan County will miss you, Miller.

Visitation will be held at Akers-James Funeral Home, Logan, WV, on Wednesday, December 19, from 6-9 PM. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, December 20, at First Presbyterian Church in Logan.

In lieu of flowers, the Cope family requests donations to the First Presbyterian Church, 622 Stratton Street, Logan, WV 25601, care of the Hungry Lamb Initiative.

E. Miller was a special kind of guy: always kind, always had a smile and always had a good word for everyone! Not many like him! My sympathies to his family and friends. We attended Matewan High School together! Special times. Carolyn Thompson Barnett.

While words fail to capture the pain of losing Mr. Cope we look forward to the time when words will fail to capture the joy of having our heavenly Father return your dear one to you. The bible hold out to us a truly beautiful promise. This wonderful promise of hope is recorded at Daniel 12:2 "And many of those asleep in the dust of the earth will wake up, some to everlasting life." Imagine our dear loved ones, whom we have lost in death, just sleeping waiting to wake up again and be reunited with us. How we long for that special day so close at hand.
